Midgard School is a contemporary educational environment with well-developed infrastructure for children’s development and recreation. Our team joined the project at the working documentation stage for the construction of an indoor swimming pool.
The main challenge was a tight programme and difficult weather conditions – construction ran from November through December 2023. This demanded immediate yet structurally sound decisions: selecting materials for fast installation without compromising structural integrity, while meeting the high thermal and waterproofing requirements of a building with elevated humidity.
Spatial Planning
Main volume (ground floor): Pool basin (25×9 m) at the centre. Ancillary block (98.90 sq.m, excluding water surface):
- entrance lobby 44.64 sq.m,
- women’s changing room 20.08 sq.m,
- men’s changing room 19.50 sq.m,
- coach’s room 14.68 sq.m.
Technical level (104.96 sq.m): Dedicated basement/technical floor for filtration, ventilation and water heating systems.
Structural Features and Materials
- Frame: Steel structure (columns, trusses and beams) for fast, reliable construction within a tight programme.
- Walls and facades: Sandwich panels with steel frame. Generous glazed facade area for natural daylighting. Decorative metal tree motifs on the facade.
- Roof build-up: Sheet waterproofing membrane, mineral insulation (200 mm, density 120 kg/m3), galvanised profiled steel sheet.
- Floor: Hydronic underfloor heating throughout the pool area. EPS and PIR insulation (100 mm) to minimise heat loss.
Despite a demanding winter deadline, the building was successfully commissioned. Today the pool operates at full capacity and has become a popular weekend destination for local residents, demonstrating the high social and commercial value of the completed project.
